What might my day look like?
Here’s an example of the programming that we created for a group of 400 high school students (run over six half day sessions. Each group consisted of 12-15 young men and women, ages 15-18, who were interested in pursuing a medical carrier. They had a full 3 week itinerary, and we ran their program during day 2 of their schedule. Many of the students were from across the United States, as well as international. Since the students had only known met each other during day at Johns Hopkins University where they were staying, this was the first time that they were together as a group.
Each program lasted 3 hours with approximately 75 participants total. As a “fully facilitated” program, each group had an experienced facilitator lead the challenges and discussions. The goal of the program was team bonding and leadership awareness. The specific activities varied amongst the teams but followed the same pattern:
- Icebreaking activities – Lighthearted initiatives that made it easier for people to first get to know each other at the beginning of the day. Teams discussed goals and objectives at this time
- Name Games – Games that helped everyone learn each other’s names quickly. One of our favorite games is called “Curtain Call”. The group is divided and a partition is held up between each group. One participant secretly steps up to the curtain from each team. When the curtain drops, who ever says the name of the person first wins a point for their team. We often ask “how many people know each other” when we start a program, with very few people knowing one another. To our surprise, we find that most people know everyone’s names by the end of this challenge.
- Sequenced challenges – The teams are tasked with solving specific challenges that help participants bond together, as well as tap into their natural talents. For this group, the facilitated discussions helped team members identify and practice leadership qualities, with a focus as to how this would be beneficial for someone interested in a medical career. They wanted their challenges to be more adventurous so they chose our ropes course in Randallstown, Maryland as their venue. (We run similar programs for our clients in hotels, client locations or parks that are equally challenging but less adventurous)
- Ropes course adventure challenge – Specific to this client’s goals, the first half of the program was dedicated to challenges that were on the ground or off the ground but did not require special safety equipment (low ropes). The second half of the day consisted of challenges that did require ropes and harnesses and were usually 30’ to 40’ off of the ground.
- Wrap up – We like to tie everything together during a final debrief at the end of the day so participants can internalize their take away moments and share what was most meaningful for them.
